History
The New Eagle Volunteer Fire Company began in 1927 with 20 members. The first officers were:
President-John George Noble
Secretary-Howard Baker
Treasurer-Edward Baker
Fire Chief-William Graham
Other Members were: Edward Ackman, Ed Roney, David Sleights, Cy McGinty, Vic McGinty, Albert Raynals, Earl Clark, Joe Furinga, Pat Kruki, Edgar Moore, and Americus Podesta.
The Company began as more or less a bucket brigade with fire brooms and extinguishers. The Monongahela Fire Department helped with needed. Later on as more men joined, the firemen would canvas the borough for ground meat, hot dogs, and money which helped with bazaars as money making was need for a truck and equipment. The fireman also attended parades in neighboring communities.
The first engine for the fire company was purchased second-hand. It was an International engine that they kept in a garage next to the present New Eagle borough building. The second floor of the building was used as the firemen's meeting room. The old International was in such bad shape that it had to be pushed to start it, so in 1947, they decided to purchases a new American LaFrance 500 gal. pumper.
In need of a way to make more money to purchase equipment, the firemen purchased the old Natatorium Building from Mr. Grodecour of Monongahela at a cost of $8500. Then the fire department began to hold bingos in this building with tables and benches built by the members. The building also included an indoor swimming pool. The mortgage for this building was paid off in three years. The department also purchases a piece of property on Main Street two doors down from the present station and built a three bay station that is the current station in use today.
Two more pieces of equipment were purchased in the 1950's. The first was a Chevrolet Apache Panel 57 and a 750 gal. American LaFrance Body on a Ford chassis. This Ford chassis was then sold to Valley Inn Fire Department in 1965 and a new custom 1000 gal. Mack engine was purchased. With bingos thriving, a new rescue truck, a Bruco on a Ford 800 chassis, was purchased in 1970. In 1977, a new Seagrave custom engine 1250 gal. pumper was purchased which is still in the fleet today.
As the years progressed from 1977, more up-to-date equipment was purchased such as radios to connect to Monongahela Police and Fire and the Washington County setup, new self-contained breathing apparatus, hose lines, and turnout gear. In 1983 the fire department purchased rescue equipment. This rescue equipment included Amkus Spreaders and Rams. By 1987, New Eagle Volunteer Fire Department was one of the best rescue equipped organizations in the valley.
In 1986 the Mack engine was refurbished with a new Mack diesel engine and updated panel, pump and matadale, and a re-certified 1000 gal. pumper at a cost of $30,000. In 1993 the Ford Bruco was replaced with a '93 International Rescue Truck. In 1997, the Mack engine was replaced with a '97 Seagrave engine purchased from Seagrave Manufacturer. In 2000, a Dodge Dakota was purchased and was put into service as Squad 14. In 2002, the department purchased a refurbished 1977 Seagrave ladder truck from Fairless Hills Fire Department.
